In this photo President Karzai is walking past a Palace honor guard and into the inaugural hall. He is escorting the former King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Zahir Shah. For you history buffs, the King's government was overthrown in 1973 and he lived in exhile in Italy for many years. In the background is one of the four towers around the Palace. Although it looks formidable in the photo, the roof is caved in. Many of the outer buildings of the Palace were damaged or destroyed during 25 hears of war, although the building in which the ceremony took place is reportedly more than 150 years old. The walls are about 3 feet thick!
