Here a mother watches and smiles as I hand her son a stuffed animal from my friends and colleagues at Powell Tate/WeberShandwick in Washington DC. This young man was so friendly that I suspect he received several toys from the 10 of us who filtered through the room. There are 2-8 patients per room, depending upon the size. Mothers sit by each of the beds watching over their children. As you scroll throught the photos, you will notice the colorful furry blankets on the beds. They were new. Apparently the hospital had a high-level visitor earlier in the week, so the director ensured that each bed had sheets and a blanket. Just a week earlier most beds had neither -- they had only what the parents brought for their child.
